Futures Betting Guide
A futures bet is a wager that doesn't settle until weeks or months later. Super Bowl winner, World Series winner, MVP, regular-season win totals — all futures.
Common Futures Markets
- Championship futures — Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Champion, Stanley Cup, MLS Cup
- Award futures — NFL MVP, NBA MVP, Cy Young, Hart Trophy
- Win totals — Regular season over/under win totals for each team
- Division winners — Win the division outright
- Conference winners — NFC/AFC, Western/Eastern
- Make the playoffs — Yes/no team will reach postseason
Why Futures Have High EV Potential
Books post pre-season odds based on early projections. Smart bettors who do their own modeling can find significant edges before the line moves with public action.
Example: Vegas pre-season Super Bowl odds for the Chiefs in 2023 opened at +550. By the time their playoff run started, those tickets were worth a multiple of their cost. Lock in an outright pick early and you ride the EV up as the season plays out.
The Capital Cost
Futures tie up your bankroll for months. A $100 Super Bowl future placed in August doesn't pay until February. That's six months your money is locked. Account for this in bankroll management.
Hedging Futures
If your future ticket survives to the championship game, you can hedge by betting the other side at game time — locking in a guaranteed profit regardless of the outcome.
Example: $100 future at +550 on the Chiefs. If they make the Super Bowl, the Chiefs are favored at -150. Bet $400 on their opponent at +130. If Chiefs win: $100 × 5.5 = $550 profit, minus $400 lost = $150 net. If Chiefs lose: $400 × 1.3 = $520 profit, minus $100 lost = $420 net. Hedge math always favors locking in.

Futures Tips
- Lock in early. Lines tighten as evidence accumulates.
- Diversify across books. Different NJ books offer different futures with different prices.
- Don't over-allocate. Cap futures at 5-10% of your annual sports betting bankroll.
- Track your tickets. If you forget, the bonus expires and your locked profit goes to zero.
