How to Bet on Sports in New Jersey

If you're 21 or older and physically located in NJ, placing your first legal sports bet takes about 10 minutes from sign-up to first wager. Here's exactly what to do.

Step 1: Pick a Sportsbook

Start with one of the 15 NJ-licensed sportsbooks. For most beginners, FanDuel or DraftKings is a sensible first choice — they have the deepest market coverage, the most polished apps, and the largest welcome bonuses. Both are mobile-first.

Step 2: Create Your Account

Open the app or website and click "Sign up." You'll need:

  • Full legal name
  • Date of birth (must be 21+)
  • Last four digits of your Social Security Number
  • Physical address inside NJ (mailing address can differ but you must be physically in NJ to bet)
  • Email and password
  • Phone number for SMS verification

You don't need to be a NJ resident — just physically located inside NJ when you bet. Geolocation runs in the background to confirm your location.

Step 3: Verify Your Identity

NJ-licensed books are required to confirm your identity through the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) checks. Most users are auto-verified within seconds based on their SSN and address. If auto-verification fails, you may need to upload a photo of your driver's license or passport.

Step 4: Make a Deposit

Minimum deposits are typically $5-$10 depending on the operator. Common methods include:

  • Online banking (ACH) — no fees, available everywhere
  • Debit card — instant, universally accepted
  • PayPal — fastest withdrawals later, available at most NJ books
  • Play+ Prepaid — purpose-built betting card

Step 5: Claim Your Welcome Bonus

Most welcome offers trigger automatically on your first qualifying bet. Read the fine print: typical conditions include minimum odds (-200 or longer), a 7-14 day expiry, and 1x rollover on bonus bets. See the full promos page for current offers.

Step 6: Place Your First Bet

Open the sport you want, find your game, and tap an odds line. The bet slip pops up at the bottom of the screen. Enter your stake — start small. Confirm. Done.

The most common first bets are:

  • Moneyline — pick the winner
  • Spread — pick the favorite to win by enough or the underdog to lose by less
  • Totals — pick over or under the combined point total

Read the odds explained guide if the numbers (-110, +150, etc.) look unfamiliar.

Step 7: Withdrawing Your Winnings

Tap "Cashier" or "Wallet" → "Withdraw." Pick your method and amount. PayPal is typically fastest (often same-day). ACH and Play+ are 1-3 business days. Verification on a first withdrawal can add 24-48 hours.

Things New Bettors Get Wrong

  • Chasing losses. The single biggest mistake. If you're down, walk away — don't double up to recoup.
  • Betting on your team to win every game. Emotional bets are worse than value bets. Bet the line, not the team.
  • Ignoring vig. Standard NFL spreads at -110 cost you about 5% per bet. Shop different books for better juice.
  • Wagering more than you can afford to lose. Set a monthly bankroll and don't exceed it.
