March Madness Betting in New Jersey
The biggest college basketball event of the year; and one with critical NJ-specific rules. Read this before placing a single bracket bet.
March Madness drives the second-highest annual betting handle in NJ behind the Super Bowl. Every NJ book offers full coverage of the NCAA Tournament; round-by-round markets, live betting, futures, and bracket-pool products. But there's a catch unique to New Jersey.
⚠ Critical NJ College Betting Restrictions
New Jersey state law prohibits all betting on:
- Any college game involving a NJ-based school (Rutgers, Princeton, Seton Hall, Monmouth, Rider, etc.)
- Any college game physically played in New Jersey, regardless of which teams are playing
- Individual player props on any NJ-based college athlete
What this means in March: If Rutgers or Seton Hall makes the tournament, you cannot wager on those games from inside NJ. If a tournament round is hosted at the Prudential Center in Newark, you cannot bet on those games either; regardless of which schools are playing.
You CAN bet freely on every other tournament game involving non-NJ schools at out-of-state venues.

March Madness Tips
- Shop spreads in the first weekend. NJ books move CBB lines quickly and the gaps between books can reach 1-2 full points.
- Use bonus bets on the round of 64. Upsets are most common in the round of 64; bonus bets soften the variance.
- Bracket pools are entertainment. Free pools at FanDuel/DraftKings are fun but the EV is low. Treat them as marketing.
- Live betting is sharper. CBB pace and 30-second possession clocks make live markets move quickly. bet365 has the fastest live execution.
